Design Technology Subject Intent Statement:
Design and Technology is the embodiment of combining creativity to practical skills in the pursuit of the improvement of functional and aesthetic needs of everyday life. Students apply these skills whether this be looking at materials, tools, skills, ingredients or the design of a product. Design and Technology curriculums deliver a valued broad subject area, covering and introducing to students a diverse range of new and transferrable skills. Design and Technology enables students to identify how and when to apply these skills to a range of subjects and future careers; being about to use their hands and technology.
Design and Technology uses real life contexts. This will enable children and young people to actively contribute, to create, to improve the culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and others – from the local to the global stage. It allows students to take risks and become more resourceful, innovative, resilient, enterprising and capable. The study develops the skills independent working as well as be able to problem solve, working in a team. Design and Technology develops critical thinking; understanding the impact of design and technology on daily life as well as consider and the sustainability of the world and its natural resources. They look at how they can meet people’s needs through deign-briefs, from the theoretical level of design (such as ergonomics) to the build stage. Design and Technology empowers learners to understand why the process of design and how designers seek to meet the needs of people, business and the wider community. At a deeper level it enables our designers to get inside the human mind to understand the overall value of designing and producing and the thinking of themselves and others.
Design and Technology provides opportunities for students to develop technical language, apply value judgements about aesthetics, economic principles as well as those of the moral, social, and ethical considerations of designing and creating a product up to and including evaluating.
Continuous Curriculum Plan - Construction:
Our Continuous Curriculum Plans (CCPs) navigate the academic journey of your child by subject from KS2 all the way up into KS5. They allow both staff, students and parents to be clear on what is being taught and where assessments lay in the school year, which in turn, gives students autonomy over their learning as it empowers them to prepare ahead of time.
