Mr Durkin

Mr Durkin started his career in teaching in 2004, training as a History teacher. Previously, he had a career in business in the private sector at senior executive level for a FTSE 100 company. He also holds a pilot's licence, achieving this in June 2026. He teaches History but has taught a variety of Humanities subjects as well as Business Studies. He has held leadership roles in a variety of schools, serving different communities and was very proud to become Headteacher of Castle View School in 2016. He teaches at our school as he believes it is important to maintain his skills as practitioner, his subject knowledge, and pedagogy. It is an aspect of his role that he very much enjoys and it keeps him rooted in his practice and the classroom, invaluable as a school leader. At Castle View School he wants all children to be known as individuals and develop the knowledge and skills to be an effective learner and a well-rounded citizen.

After completing a degree in Fine Art at the University of Northampton I spent 16 months working as an Artist in Residence at a Primary School in Southend-on-Sea. During this time I found that my passion for arts education far outweighed my desire to be an independent Artist. This lead me to complete my teaching qualification to become an Art Teacher at secondary school in Essex in 2004. I remained at this same school where later became the Head of Art before progressing in my career to take on the responsibilities of Head of Year and later Director of Key Stage 3. In 2013 I joined another secondary school in the North East of Essex as part of their Senior Leadership Team. During my 7 years at this school I progressed from Assistant Vice Principal to Vice Principal before becoming Head of Academy. This journey has allowed me to gain leadership experience in Curriculum; Pastoral and Teaching & Learning. In January 2021 I joined the Zenith Trust as a Trust Deputy Headteacher and was deployed to Castle View School. My role now sees me working within the school to support Teaching & Learning through the schools Excellence Strategy, as well as working across the Trust to support the Pupil Premium provision.

I began my teaching career 20 years ago  working in a variety of schools in East London before embarking upon my first senior leadership position in Essex in 2006. I have enjoyed a rich experience in leading many aspects of school strategic  development, including Teaching & Learning, Pastoral, Curriculum and Assessment. Alongside this, I qualified as an Ofsted Inspector in 2012 and inspected in East of England schools until 2019. This has provided me with a depth and breadth of knowledge that I am able to apply in my current role. The role of Trust Deputy Headteacher is a privileged position as I am able to make a real difference in not only Castle View School but also across the wider trust. At Castle View School I am proud to be working with the students, staff and wider community and enjoy being part of our journey to success. I am very lucky to work with so many inspirational young people as they grow and flourish into the Canvey Island leaders of the future.

Mr Saxton graduated from the University of Brighton, Chelsea School with a degree in Physical Education with QTS. He currently coaches an Essex Schools Football representative side and has played numerous sports to a high level.
